Societies
Fishermen's associations in the emirate strive to meet the needs of fishermen, providing them with material and moral support to preserve the ancestral profession and encourage future generations to practice it. This profession is one of the oldest Emirati traditions and a fundamental part of the heritage and customs. The association operates under the supervision and oversight of the Ministry of Economy, in accordance with Federal Law No. 13 of 1976, to preserve and sustain fishery resources.
The Sharjah Cooperative Society for Fishermen was established in Sharjah and officially registered by the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs on 31/01/1990. Since its inception, the association has worked to economically and socially improve its members' lives. It has set up a Fishermen’s Council at its old headquarters and distributes annual cash profits to fishermen based on purchase revenues. There are 339 fishermen registered with the association in Sharjah.
