Sharjah Fishermen's Cooperative Societies

Overview

The fishermen's societies in the emirate of Sharjah, work to meet the needs of fishermen and support them both financially and morally to preserve the profession of their forefathers and encourage future generations to practice it. It is one of the oldest professions practiced by the Emirati people and is an integral part of their heritage and traditions. These societies, five in number in the Emirate of Sharjah, are supervised and regulated by the Ministry of Economy under Federal Law No. 13 of 1976, and include approximately 1,241 fishermen across the emirate, with the aim of preserving and sustaining fishery resources.

Objectives of the Societies

  • Preserve and develop fish resources in accordance with the regulations and systems followed in the country
  • Serve the fishermen in the region, provide them with support, and raise their concerns to the relevant authorities
  • Foster a spirit of cooperation among members and improve their economic and social conditions
